Tuesday Tech: An average Facebook user

In their quest for cool infographics, the people at mashable.com have produced a really cool info graphic of an average Facebook user. Check it out at: http://mashable.com/2011/11/18/facebook-stats/

A few interesting things. The average user has 229 Facebook friends:

•  22% of those friends are from high school,
•  12% are co-workers
•  9% are from college 

3% of people'  who are  friends on Facebook have  only met once. The average user has never met 7% of their friends on Facebook. So 10% total belong in the rarely connected category.

For nor fot profits, what is interesting is that 7% of friends have been met through voluntary groups.

In 2008, the average user is 38 years old. Two years ago, it was 33 indicating that the number of "older" people on Facebook has been growing fast. Further, the median age of the planet is 28.4 years of age. In the USA the median age is 36.8. This indicates Facebook population is actually skewed toward an older demographic than the general population. Thats fascinating. So much for a "young person's tool". (Australia's median age is 37.5 years so Australia and Facebook's populations are closely aligned!)

56% of users update their status weekly and only 18% daily.

Tuesday Tech: Social Media Training for Communities

Chances are, if you are reading this blog, you are comfortable Social Media user. Many agencies and individuals aren't. Over the last two years, I have been presenting two Social Media workshops. One is an introduction to the key Social Media tools and how to use them. The other is looking at strategy.

Reactions to it have been overwhelmingly positive:

"I am a regular Facebook user and you have taught me so much more."

I have had one woman, however, attack me for recommending agencies look at Facebook: "I hate Facebook and all it represents. I don't understand why you would tell anyone to use it"

I also often get "why would anyone want to use social media?"  when the reality is 1000 million people+ are on it! I dont aim to convert people to Social Media but I do get people to an understanding of something that they may know a little or a lot about and get agencies realistically looking at the pros and cons of the Social Media space.

Social Media Training in the Hills

Break time

Had a very enjoyable day in the Adelaide Hills training 

with Hills Volunteering and Mt Barker District Council. 

There were attendees from the Private Sector, government Sector and Community Sector. 

We looked at Social Media. Some good questions came from the group:

• where does a "Tweet" go?
• how do we keep records in an electronic age when  data can be changed so quickly?
• do we need to keep records of Facebook conversations for legal reasons?
• Is Flickr safe for children?
• Where should I store photos? Flickr or Facebook?

We also had a presentation about the facts behind the new Australian National Broadband Network like what the wires look like, the connections, the costs, the equipment. It is indeed very visionary and very different to what I thought. 

Was very excited by the provision of fresh fruit for lunch and snacks. Thanks guys!

I got an average of 94% which would seem to be "acceptable".

Any Perth people? I am in Perth in about a month and would LOVE to do a Social Media workshop if anyone would be keen to arranging that!
