I am interested in a new report from Blackbaud. that says online giving in the USA rose just 0.3 percent in 2011 after years of double digit growth. For example online giving grew 35 per cent in 2010.
What is more telling is that international giving dropped significantly. This was probably due to the impact of Haiti where there was a massive online response in 2010.
What is also interesting is the difference between small and large organisations:
More than one third of 2011's online giving occurred in October, November, and December last year, One fifth (20.3 percent) of all online giving takes place in December. This may be linked to the Holidays?
Some 43 percent of donations received were between $1,000 and $5,000 which surprised me. I thought they would be far lower. Some people are clearly moving to online giving being their primary mode of giving.
This has implications for the way non profits plan their online communications. They do need to be planned!

- Larger nonprofits, with total annual fundraising of more than $10 million, saw online fundraising increase by 8.6 percent on a year-to-year basis
- Medium-sized nonprofits, with annual budgets between one and ten million dollars had a 13.1 percent increase
- Small nonprofits, with annual less than $1 million, were close behind with a 12.8 percent year-over-year increase. I wonder are they catching up with online platforms?
Education nonprofits saw the biggest increase in online fundraising- up 40 percent since 2009. Online giving slowed for Environment and Animals and Human Services groups in 2011, but they still experienced good positive growth.
