#Biebs move over for Pres. #Obama

An event occurred this week which has impacted on the content of one of my Social Media training sessions! Up to this week, the world's most influential man on the internet was Justin Bieber. This little known fact excites or dismays my workshop participants.

In the last week, this changed with Obama moving to the top spot of the most influential person on the internet and Beiber sliding down. The arbiter of this is Klout, a somewhat controversial measuring tool. Barack Obama has  a Klout score of 99 out of 100 up from 95.  Justin fell an incredible eight points from 100 to a new Kout score of 92.

The cause of this swing was a change in the Klout algorithm. Previously Klout only measured Facebook and Twitter. Now Linkedin, Foursquare and Blogger are included. If you have a Wikipedia entry, this will also impact your score.


The effect of the new algorithm was a jump in my score from 57 to 66. This was after a period of lower activity from me which had seen my score drop down to 47. One of the other upgrades Klout is introducing is the provision of information on what activities cause your score to go up and down.  That will come in the next few weeks.

Klout says that the average Klout Score is around 40. They note that the Score becomes exponentially harder to increase as you move up the scale. For instance, it is much harder to move from a 70 to a 75 than from a 20 to a 25. My challenge is to get over 70!

One of the things that is interesting about Klout is that it does give you some sense of how well a person uses Social Media. For example, Beth Kanter who I consider to be the number one guru on Social Media and Not for Profits has a score of 79. Not quite Obama territory, of course,  but it is definitely enough to tell me she knows what she is doing (and I am not too far behind her!). I have a list of "influential" people that I am connected with.

Interestingly, high scorers can get Klout Perks, rewards for their influence. The idea is you take the perk and then Tweet or Facebook about it. The company providing the perk gets publicity althiugh Klout says: "You have no obligation to talk about the product. You're welcome to tell the world you love it, you dislike it, or say nothing at all. Most Perks seem to be for people with scores over 50 - and living in the USA.

So is Klout good or bad? Is it real or a crock? To be honest, I dont know but I do know that if you engage someone to do Social Media training or marketing and their score is 21, what does that tell you about how well they engage Social Media? You are wasting your time and money. You can find out someone's Klout score by entering their name at Klout.com. You can also download an app for your phone and an app that embeds into Twitter and tells you the Klout score of everyone who tweets.

And of course, Klout ignores the people who have an influence off Social Media. If a volunteer reaches a child to read on a one to one basis, what is their measure of their influence? Life changing but Klout does not measure that does it?

Klout Kollapse

Klout claims they are a way of measuring your influence on-line. My Klout score sits at 56-57 which is considered to be a very high score.

I recently took a three week vacation. While I did answer some emails, I enjoyed eating, drinking, exploring and visiting friends in Europe. My Facebook usage dropper right back and I almost completely stopped tweeting.


The effect on my Klout score has been dramatic. By the end of week one of my vacation, my klout score was 55. End of week two it had fallen to 54 and then 52 at the end of my vacation. It had a slight bounce in my first days back but after a week back at work, it is now 50.

I am interested to know whether it has any more room to fall or if this is it. Now to see if I can become influential again. Will people have missed me? (By the way 50 is still considered to be a very good score!)

Facebook lets you edit posts

Up to last week, you only had two choices with your Facebook comments:
  1. delete (and re type it)
  2. leave it

Now all you have to do is hover over the right corner of your comment and a pencil icon will appear. This will give you a drop down option of either editing or deleting the comment.

You’ll can also view the edit history of any comment by clicking on the “Edited” button near the date stamp. This means you can roll back to earlier versions of something - typing mistakes and all.

Tuesday Tech: You don't need Social Media

I recently did a training at a Conference. One of the other speakers on the Platform enthusiastically espoused the benefits of Facebook and how it would help people get younger volunteers.

I talked about all of the other things people would have to do to change their organisations like change.


I was a bit disheartened to hear at the end of the day, how many said their first action returning to their agency would be to set up a Facebook page. I can understand why. Going online and adding yourself to the Facebook maelstrom will take 20 minutes. Re designing your volunteer roles, restructuring your training and educating your current volunteers on how to welcome new ones is harder and takes more time.

But for most of them the Facebook page will "fail" without other key changes. Social Media is not a panacea. In fact for many organisations, it is a waste of time or distraction. Which is why I was glad to see this brilliant article on  Why-your company probably doesnt need a facebook page

Not True. Facebook makes enough money from ads. Charging would drive people from the site. This warning is a re hash of one that has been doing the rounds forever. Check out my previous blogpost on recognising spam on Facebook. Before posting stuff like this, check it out!

Tuesday Tech: Farmers Start Tweeting


West Australia's Sunday Times report the phenomena of Australian farmers tweeting. In the wake of the animal abuses recorded in the industry last year, farmers are looking for a way to communicate their work to city residents. This could be one way to bridge the urban rural divide in Australia. 
Animal Rights advocates have been very good with Social Media whilst farmers have been largely silent. Now West Australian Rural Woman of the Year, Catherine Marriott, (@roseycatherinewill run workshops across the state to help farmers understand how to use the technology.

Tuesday Tech: Facebook Timeline for Pages

Blogged recently about Timeline, the latest Facebook change. The grumbling about the timeline format seems to have faded to a muted mutterring as people get used it - and some (shock horror) users even seem to like Facebook Timeline!

Now it is the turn of businesses, not for profits and religious institution. On Tuesday March 6, Timeline came to facebook Pages and eight million brands switched in the first week. (There are 37 million brand pages). My company, People First -Total Solutions was one of the eight million! More than a million Facebook Pages per day have been making the switch since. Some companies have started muttering, complaining about the enforced switch.  All brand pages will forcibly convert to Timeline by March, 30 2011. 

Timeline organises your information chronologically allowing people to move to and from specific dates and timings. The idea is that  the “timeline” profile page layout will allows businesses, brands and organisations to be more visual in the way they express themselves.  


If as a company or not for profit brand, you are still using Facebook as if you were  a person and not a company, they you need to get that fixed first. Do it now! 


What needs to be done to manage switching to Timeline?


Step One: Choose a Cover Photo for your brand
The most obvious feature of the new visual focus is the large (public) Cover Photo at the top of the page. Cover photos must be at least 399 pixels wide to a maximum of  850 pixels wide. Height: 315 pixels.


I have found this a really difficult task. As this is the first thing, people will see, I wanted to be right. Do I show a training scene? Do we use the picture from the top of our e news? Or do I show a more casual shot? The experts are saying that  the picture needs to be  "dynamic and representative".  Facebook have some rules to follow for cover images:

  1. No price or purchase information, such as “33% off” or “Find it at our website
  2. No contact information
  3. No references to Liking or Sharing
  4. No calls to action including “Donate now”, "Buy Today" or “Tell your friends and family”
You change your Cover Photo by clicking anywhere on the Cover Photo. 


Step Two: Update your Brand's Profile Picture

For my personal Facebook, this is easy. I use a photo of myself. For People First-Total Solutions, I oscillate between a picture of me or the logo. Currently it is our logo. You may use a logo, mascot or something else that clearly represents your brand.


Facebook recommends a square image that’s 180 by 180 pixels.



Step Three: Update the About Us Section


On the left hand side is a button labelled  "About ". When you are logged in, click on the about link and when the about page opens,  “edit” buttons will appear. Annoyingly, Facebook won't let me have more than one phone number, and People First have five.


Step Four: Build Your Apps
On the Right hand side are "Apps" which you can use to build your brand. The first "app" are your Photos. This aways is the first app so you cannot move or delete it. All of the otherapps, can be addded or removed easily.



Step Five: Fill Up Timeline

The next feature is the ability to add milestones to the timeline eg when company was founded. or Opened New Office.  When someone visits a page, they can easily scroll through the highlights of the organisation.  





Step Six: Fill Up Timeline

Highlight important posts and milestones on the timeline: There are two ways to do this:

  1. Pin a post to the top of your page for seven days. Click on the pencil that appears in the top right corner of the post. It will give you the choice of "pinning, changing date of  post or remove it entirely. 
  2. Increase size of a post from one column to both columns. Click the star that appears in the top  right corner of a post and voila!. The post will move down the timeline as new milestones and info is added.


Step Seven: Engaging with Admin Panel


The Admin panel includes: 


  • Notifications which tells you key information about vistors
  • Messages -people can now quickly and easily send messages 
  • New Likes -obvious?
  • Insights which tracks users and interactions with the page. Tracking kicks in when your page has 30 "Likes"
  • Page Tips giving you Facebook lessons


There are three main options for the Admin Page:
  1. Manage: - allows you to edit the page
  2.  Build Audience: For example you can invite email contacts from Workshops, outings etc
  3. Help-obvious?

Sharing outside Facebook is easy but not as obvious.

On the post click on where it says when the story was published. The post will appear by itself with its url in the url box at the top of your browser. Copy and paste this and you have your link!

The Cowling Report Readership rises 30% in February

Thank you for your on going readership of this blog. In February, we increased the number of readers by a third. A lot of that growth was connected to a blog post on major, major changes to the Volunteer Centre funding arrangements in Australia.

Spotting Spam on Facebook [Updated]

I get a lot of questions in my workshops about the rash of spam that people keep "sharing" and "posting" on Facebook.  There are some ways you can spot such spam:

WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO...IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. As soon as you see a whole or most of a message in Capital Letters or one with lots of sentences which use capital letters, assume spam (or the writer is drunk)


2. Hysterical Headlines

eg IF YOU HAVE A CHILD THEN READ THIS!  PLEASE PASS THIS TO ANYONE THAT HAS SMALL CHILDREN!!  
or  


FACEBOOK FRIENDS!!! SOME APPS ARE SENDING NOT VERY NICE MESSAGES USING YOUR NAME!!!


The more hysterical the headline, assume it is fake.


3. Share this and a Child/Dog/Tree/Rainforest will recieve a donation of 1c, 3c, 5c, 10c, $1, $3 etc
What about the ones that promise you a donation to a charity, money, an IPAD or an iphone when you like a story or photo or if you share that story or photo. Sadly, simply sharing any story or image on Facebook wont make any difference to any cause. There is No money given for simple sharing a story. No hospital, charity, company or Facebook themselves have ever organised donations based on the number of times a photo, message or email is shared.

4. Heartwarming Fake Stories
The story below leaves one full of admiration for the airline staff. It has circulated widely with different airlines and destinations included.

On a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, a middle-aged, well-off white South African Lady has found herself sitting next to a black man. She called the cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating. 

"What seems to be the problem Madam?" asked the attendant. 

"Can`t you see?" she said " You`ve sat me next to a kaffir. I can`t possibly sit next to this disgusting human. Find me another seat!" 

"Please calm down Madam." the stewardess relied. "The flight is very full today, but I`ll tell you what I`ll do-I`ll go and check to see if we have any seats available in club or first class." The woman cocks a snooty look at the outraged black man beside her (not to mention many of the surrounding passengers). A few minutes later the stewardess returns with the good news, which she delivers to the lady, who cannot help but look at the people around her with a smug and self satisfied grin: "Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I`ve spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one seat in first class." Before the lady has a chance to answer, the stewardess continues ... "It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, and I have had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someone be forced to sit next to such an obnoxious person." With which, she turned to the black man sitting next to the woman, and said: "So if you`d like to get your things, sir, I have your seat ready for you..." At which point, apparently the surrounding passengers stood and gave a standing ovation while the black guy walks up to the front of the plane. 

.. people will forget what you said .... .. people will forget what you did .... .. but people will never forget how you made them feel. 

This tale is almost certainly apocryphal. Add to it, the stories of kittens, Vietnam vets and doggies that appear regularly. Before posting something you can check if it is real at snopes.com or by copying or pasting the story inro Google or simply go to a news channel. Yesterday,  I was asked to commemorate the deaths of some soldiers in a nasty helicopter crash. The tragic crash which supposedly happened yesterday in fact happened last year.

5. False Sayings
I love this picture on the right because it illustrates the stupidity of posting without checking things. If you still don't understand this one: the net did not exist in Lincoln's day!

6. Links outside Facebook
Various messages get posted on Facebook that say: you can now see who has been viewing your Facebook Profile OR you can find out who has been stalking you OR you can now get the "dislike". When you click the button, you exit Facebook and are presented with the option of entering your password. Don't do it! This is dangerous. You are giving your log in and password to someone else. This is how people's Facebooks get "hacked"

Tuesday Tech: 360

Two apps I was reading about struck me as potentially useful for not for profits. One is free and one is 99 cents (I don't make any money from the apps!).

The first is called Microsoft's Photosynth (free) and the second is called 360 Panorama. They both allow you to take a series of photos in a circle and the apps will turn them into a full panorama. Both look amazing. Photosynth is from Microsoft.

There is great potential for use in volunteer recruitment, at events, in trainings.

The pictures can then be emailed, added to Facebook etc.

Wednesday World Changers: Do Something

I really enjoyed a blog post about Do Something.org today. The starting question is: Q: What can teens do to help change the world with no money, no car, and no adults?


Do something is a great example of mobilising young people. They had 12 programs in 2010 with 147,000 teens participating. In 2011 it was 16 with 204,600 teens participating. In 2012 they aim to have 30 programs.


Their programs include:   Teens for Jeans (video here); Give a Spit About Cancer; Animal Welfare; Cause Scavenger Hunts; and Grandparents Gone Wired. (I wonder if teens would still join in even without the groovy names?)




The post notes that dosomething.org has three criteria for deciding whether to start a program. I think we could all take note from their criteria:
  1. Pop culture/current events: What are people talking about? Has a celebrity that teens respect taken up a new cause? Has a natural disaster impacted teens somewhere?
  2. What do people want?: DoSomething.org relies heavily on crowdsourcing. In fact, they have a youth advisory council which they convene every two weeks to find out what’s on their minds and consequently, what DoSomething.org should be thinking about as well.
  3. Data: What is Facebook traffic, unique visitors to website, and other quantifiable stats showing about  their constituents’ interests- in other words they are using social media to their advantage
Lessons for any organisation --and frankly any age group. If we want people to donate their time and or money, lets ask:
1. whats contemporary in terms of causes/issues?
2. what is on people's minds?
3. what are people focussed on on-line?

Using Facebook's New Timeline [Updated]


Timeline or not to timeline has been the question on many fingertips recently as Facebook unveiled its newest update: Timeline. This has been "opt-in" but is now starting to be rolled out for everyone. It will soon not be optional. Some users have loved it- and some have hated it - as many hate every Facebook change. Timeline, however, looks like it is here to stay, despite what some scammers have been suggesting. Don't believe any emails or messages suggesting Timeline will be rolled back. There has also been some hysteria about the changes and impact on privacy...see below.

This video shows how the timeline sequence works. One fears what will be unrolled at people's 18th and 21st Birthday parties in the futureTimeline is being steadily added to Facebook profiles. When you are selected, a drop-down will appear asking you to upgrade to the new profile. There is a set of easy instructions. Follow them and you’ll be switched to the timeline.



Facebook then gives you seven days to check your Timeline before others can view it.  There are four things to consider.
  1. Choose a Cover ( the large photo at the top of your timeline, above your profile picture. NB Your profile picture and Cover are Public which means everyone visiting your profile can see them. To add a cover, follow these Facebook instructions
  2. There may be major life events you want to feature prominently on your Timeline eg new jobs or promotions, relationships, kids etc. Scroll back up to the top of the Timeline and look at the field where you’d type a new status update. Just above it, you’ll see the “Life event” button. This opens a menu of life event options.
  3. There may be posts, you don’t want anyone to see anymore. Move your mouse pointer over the story in the Timeline; two icons will appear in the right hand top corner of that story. Click the one on the one on the right that is pencil shaped and you will be given an option to delete that story.
  4. Adjust your privacy settings.  Go to "Home" (Right hand side of facebook next to your name) and choose "Privacy Settings". You can then choose your default setting. When you post from now on, Facebook will follow your default setting. 

    There are three choices as illustrated here:












      • Public- use this for messages you want anyone to see e.g "Yankees to win"
      • Friends- I recommend that you change your default settings to this-  only your friends will see your posts wherever they are posted (see below)
      • Custom -which gives you more choices:-
      1. "Only Me" (spoils the point of Facebook) but you could post "I have won a million dollars" or "Remember to buy groceries"
      2. "Friends of Friends" -use this for messages you want your friends's networks to see eg: "I am engaged"
      3. or you can set your posts so that certain people do not a post e.g. "I am too drunk to come into work today"- you may want your friends to see this but not your workmates
      You can also change your settings for every post as you post it. 

      With every Facebook change, comes myth and fear. One of which is this message which has been circulating: 

      "With the new 'FB timeline' on its way next week for EVERYONE...please do both of us a favour: Hover over my name above. In a few seconds you'll see a box that says "Subscribed." Hover over that, then go to "Comments and Likes" and unclick it. That will stop my posts and yours to me from showing up on the side bar(ticker) for everyone to see, but MOST IMPORTANTLY it LIMITS HACKERS from invading our profiles. If you re-post this I will do the same for you. You'll know I've acknowledged you because if you tell me that you've done it I'll 'like' it :) Thanks!"

      This is a myth. All that will happen is YOU wont see your friend's events. If your friend has checked friends only, then only their friends including you will see their posts anyway. If they are very nervous about the general public knowing they are eating a sandwich or their mother has tonsillitis, they need to set their privacy settings to friends NOT 'friends of Friends" or "Public" (as mentioned above). Think about this, if you have 400 friends, would you really want to change the settings for all of them. And if you do, you wont see anyone's post.

      One more thing on this scam. Every time you see a panicked messgae with CAPS, it is usually a scam. Please do not post this message. If someone does, please correct them and feel free to give them this link: http://cowlingreport.blogspot.com/2012/01/facebook-timeline.html.

      Facebook is NOT as evil and scary as you think!

      There is a lot of paranoia and fear about Facebook. I accept that Facebook makes some dumb mistakes but Facebook has been blamed for so much and given so much more power than it has.

      I see people who get  get angry at things that Facebook has shared that they themselves have inputted into the site!

       The one that amuses me is when people say "Facebook stole my password ..that is why I have sent junkmail, spam or viruses".

      How about you clicked on a link that took you OUT of Facebook and you entered your own password on that link.

      What also amuses me about the paranoia is that I can find out lots of information about you OUTSIDE Facebook.

      You are not invisible anywhere..

      Join a Yahoo group- then you have an online presence
      Post a complaint on Trip Adviser?
      Post your pic on your family web page?
      Be interviewed by your local TV/Radio station/newspaper?

      All of those things will put you online.

      Protect yourself:

      • Don't share anything online, you dont want to see repeated. Anything, anywhere.
      • Be real
      • Don't post when angry, drunk or frustrated
      • Don't share your password
      • If you are ever asked for your Facebook password by any other program, page or individual, check it is legitimate.
      • Log out of your Facebook account when on shared computers

      Tuesday Tech: An average Facebook user

      In their quest for cool infographics, the people at mashable.com have produced a really cool info graphic of an average Facebook user. Check it out at: http://mashable.com/2011/11/18/facebook-stats/

      A few interesting things. The average user has 229 Facebook friends:
      •  22% of those friends are from high school,
      •  12% are co-workers
      •  9% are from college 
      3% of people'  who are  friends on Facebook have  only met once. The average user has never met 7% of their friends on Facebook. So 10% total belong in the rarely connected category.

      For nor fot profits, what is interesting is that 7% of friends have been met through voluntary groups.

      In 2008, the average user is 38 years old. Two years ago, it was 33 indicating that the number of "older" people on Facebook has been growing fast. Further, the median age of the planet is 28.4 years of age. In the USA the median age is 36.8. This indicates Facebook population is actually skewed toward an older demographic than the general population. Thats fascinating. So much for a "young person's tool".       Facebook App and Volunteer Registration

      I have used Facebook to sign up for a couple of things recently. Its very easy.  Say "yes" to your app and the app then has all of the data that Facebook possesses about you. You can sign up for Frequent flier programs,  Events and travel offers. Its why marketers love Facebook and all the data it holds on us.

      In the middle of training, the other day, I had a thought...three related thoughts actually:

      The first is more organisations need to have a link/app on Facebook that directly leads to their volunteering or donor pages on their website. So when an agency, attendee or volunteer posts pictures of an event or training they have attended the link could be easily inserted or added or even included as a tag

      The second is why not have an app for people to sign up as a volunteer or make an enquiry as a volunteer. Your application form could be easily be populated by data from Facebook.

      Tuesday Tech: What is Klout?

      Tweeting, blogging, Facebooking you probably know. So what is Klouting?  Well its actually just Klout!

      Klout is designed to measure a person's "influence" on Social Networking sites.  Klout looks at how many people follow your blogs, tweets and facebook posts and what they do with them. So Klout looks at how many retweets, likes and shares done by others in response to an "influencer's"  messages. tweets and posts.

      Based on those interactions, Klout calculates a score out of 100, based on 35 variables. My score is currently 64.35. How does that compare with others? The CEO and co founder of Klout, Joe Fernandez says that “It’s really, really hard for a normal person to get a score above 70." That has give me an incentive!

      There are five accounts on Klout with scores above 90. They include Justin Bieber at 98 and Lady Gaga at 91. There are apparently two or three others with scores above 90. One wonders that the world is being influenced by Gaga and Bieber?! President Obama’s Klout score was at 87, with the White House Twitter account coming in at 80.



      The variables measure your influence on Facebook and Twitter in three categories

      • True Reach- the number of people you influence I found out that on average 504 people respond to my messages. Not quite world domination but Klout says: You have a larger network than most people
      • Amplification Probability -how much you influence these people- your effect on an audience
      • Network Score- how many Influencers you influence- having influenctial people you connect with means, that your message will go far. This is again a score out of 100-mine is currently 62

      What does this mean for a Not for Profit?
      1. If you are using Facebook or Twitter or both, find out who you influence. Sign up for Klout to see how many people you are influencing and who they are
      2. Find out what messages they are responding to.  This could help your organisation work out if your messages are reaching your desired audience. My most influencing messages include: Facebook, Television, Adelaide, Training, Nonprofit and Social Media
      3. Benchmark your own organisation and identify what your target score is
      4. Get me in to do training on Social Media. Seriously? Are you going to choose someone with a Klout score of 11 or one that is over 40? I have a great Social Media training course.
      5. Engage with top influencers: Find the supporters of your cause who have the highest Klout scores they are your most influential followers. By sharing information with those people, they will promote your cause, issues and messages through their networks extending your reach
      6. Recognise people who have influenced your agency in a particular topic by "giving them Klout". This is symbolised by K+.

      EEk..they want to know where I am going?

      Its bad enoigh everyone seems to know where I am thanks to Facebook, twitter and foursquare updates. Now a tool wants to tell the world where I am going to be.

      Forecast is that tool. Downloadable to your phone its in test mode. The idea is that you will tell friends where you are going and organise serendipitous get togethers. Four square and Facebook help your friends know where you are or where you have been. Useful for keeping tabs in your friends. But it doesn't tell friends where you are going to be. Forecast tells people where and when I am going to be somewhere.

      The first step is you search for where you are going to be.
      You then enter when you are going to be there
      When the time comes, Forecast asks if you are there. You can then check in and it adds the check in to your FourSquare.





















      I have been testing it for a few weeks. As you can tell, its not grabbed me, as a user, for three reasons:

      1.  I am not sure I really want people to know where I am
      2. Its one more app. I would rather it was integrated into Foursquare so i could do it there.
      3. not many people I know are on it
      As a user, I think I would use it occasionally.

      As an agency, how can we use it? Create a location for your agency on Foursquare and/or Facebook. Encourage your volunteers who use Foursquare to "check in" to that location so that people can see you exist. If volunteers use Forecast, encourage them to broadcast to the world where they are going to be.

      Wednesday World Changers: International Volunteer Manager's Day


      It is just seven weeks to go until International Volunteer Managers Day 2011 on 5th November!

      International Volunteer Managers Day is celebrated on November 5 and seeks to recognise the important work which those who lead volunteers make in the process of effective volunteering. IVMDay offers volunteer management professionals an opportunity to 'celebrate through educating' others about the work they do. The Day is supported by many groups around the world. Most of the National Volunteer Networks are supporters. I say most because Volunteering Australia continues to actively refuse to support the day which is disappointing.
